A practice of layered making

The work begins before the canvas — in the act of gathering. Newsprint, fabric, foil, wire, found paper, real leaves and twigs. Each piece is an accumulation of decisions about what to keep, what to place, and what to let remain visible beneath the next layer.

Mixed media is not a technique so much as a philosophy. The surface holds time. A torn edge from a magazine carries the year it was printed. A strip of fabric remembers the garment it came from. The work is made from things that already have a life, and that life does not disappear when they are recomposed.

The portraits at the center of this practice are not likenesses. They are presences — figures assembled from the world's material, wearing it as identity, as crown, as hair, as atmosphere.
